American Botanical Council
ABC's goals are to educate the public about beneficial herbs and plants and to promote the safe and effective use of medicinal plants. Publishes HerbalGram, the journal of the American Botanical Council and Herb Research Foundation and many educational books. The site has a glossary of terminology, and resource lists to herbal health care practitioners, insurance companies that cover alternative and complementary medicine, and natural veterinary medicine for your pet.
American Dietetic Association
ADA has nearly 70,000 members--the largest group of food and nutrition professionals in the nation. It strives to be the source of the most sound, scientifically based food and nutrition information for the US. Publishes the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. This site has a searchable database of registered dietitians and news on topics including nutrition labeling and coverage of medical nutrition therapy by Medicare. The site also has many nutrition fact sheets, excerpts from the ADA Complete Food & Nutrition Guide, and the USDA's food guide pyramid and nutrition therapies.
NIH Office of Dietary Supplements
The ODS is a Congressionally mandated office in the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Gives an overview of dietary supplements and contains the International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements (IBIDS), an online database of published scientific literature on dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals and botanicals. Has dietary fact sheets on selected supplements and publications available online.
Nutrition Navigator
This Tufts University sponsored site is a double goldmine for nutrition information seekers. It lists and rates a wide variety of nutrition-oriented sites. The rating advisory board is made up of leading U.S. and Canadian experts in the field.
Supplement Watch
SupplementWatch is a privately held corporation of health professionals who provide objective and timely information about dietary supplements so that the public can make choices about their nutrition. Some features of the site include "Ask An Expert," current news articles, Nutrition Counselor, an alphabetical guide to supplements, product reviews (with ratings), and recommended brands (with ratings).
