American Medical Association's Doctor Finder
Finding a doctor anywhere in the United States is simplified with AMA's directory, which can be searched by name and/or location. It is easy to use and provides information on schooling, board certification, internships, and specialties along with contact information for each doctor. The name search allows "sounds like" searches for those unsure of the spelling, and can be limited by geographically down to zip code. Similarly, the specialty database can be searched down to zip code, but only after limiting by state.
Docfinder
This site links to each state's licensing board. The information from state to state varies somewhat, but generally provides information about the doctor's current practice, schooling and any actions taken by the state against the specific doctor. The site can be searched by state, followed by specialty and/or doctor's name. In 'Tips for Searching,' the site recommends a partial name search if one is not sure of the exact spelling. For example, "sm" will retrieve "smith" and "small", etc.
